Upgrades to items are a common and essential way to boost the performance of a variety of items in Path of Exile. They can be a great source of additional damage, more AD or even more affixes.

Often times however upgraded Common and Magic gear is outclassed by Rare-grade gear because of their high requirements.

Armor

Armor upgrades can be applied to both weapon and armor items. They boost the performance of the item that they're attached to. Upgrades to armor are available in the game's world and can be purchased from Blacksmiths at any bonfire. They can also be salvaged by using a specialist or higher salvage kits to salvage upgrade components from other items.

The amount of damage an armored item or weapon can absorb depends on the level of its upgrades. A piece of armor upgraded to the highest upgrade level will boost its ability to absorb damage. It's important to remember that this will increase the weight of the armor, which means it must be more heavy.

There are a variety of armor upgrade available in the game. Each one has a distinct effect. Some upgrades give armor a greater number of health points, while others make it more powerful and lighter. The name of the upgrade will indicate the type of upgrade an item can receive, as shown below.

Jewels can be substituted with another jewel without destroying the original. However, you can only replace a jewel in a piece of equipment only once.
