Upgrades to an item are a way to boost the stats of an item. Depending on the upgrade type it can raise an item's Mark level or Rarity, as well as boost other stats.

Each item has a track for upgrading it. Each upgrade increases the price of the next item by a specific amount.

Item Level

When an item gets upgraded, its basic stats increase in value. This value is the sum of the perks that are leveled up (attack magic attack and defense). Upgrades can be expensive, dependent on who you employ and what you decide to do. This is due to the variety of perks that must be modified to upgrade an item.

It is also used as a gating requirement when queueing for dungeons, raids and scenarios. When deciding whether to buy or sell gear players can look at the item level. It's a good indicator of the quality of an item and the amount of damage it is capable of dealing with. The item level can also be used to compare items when looking at the inventory of a seller.

The item level can be seen by pressing the ALT key on a PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. This will show the item's full description, including the ilvl. You can also locate it by hovering over an item and typing /itemlevel in chat.

There are  item upgrader  about how the item level calculation is done. One theory suggests that the level of an item is determined by an equation that determines how valuable an item's stats really are. It takes into account the fact that different perks have different worth, and also that gems in sockets add to the item's overall value. This could result in a calculated item's ilvl that is usually very close to Blizzards actual item level.

This is not the only factor that affects the value of an item. The location of where the item dropped can also alter its stats. For example, it could add a level to the item's haste, or crit rating. This means that items dropped at higher levels will have more the ilvl than items from lower level instances.

Item Stats

Stats on an item are a significant element in what makes or breaks an item for players. The game uses a variety of them in various ways to encourage players to play with multiple weapons, and prevent one weapon from being "the best." The stat mods of a weapon boost the base stats. These stat mods are then boosted by the player's level.

The upgrades to items add by boosting certain stats on the item. The costs for upgrades are determined by the rarity of the item. A grey or white item for instance, will only be upgraded one time and items with rare tiers may be upgraded several times at more expensive costs.

Another method to alter the stats on an item is by affixing it. They are stat boosts which can be added by the player to an item. The affixes are used to provide items with extra damage, special abilities (such as the ability to revive dead or reduce cooling downs), or to distinguish them by naming them.

All affixes can be being re-rolled right now by selecting them in the upgrade window pressing the green button. This will cost a specific amount in gold and other items. These can be used as upgrade gauges, similar to other rerolling methods.

Players can choose to upgrade an item to specific stats or reroll affixes. The possible stat ranges for an item are determined by the level of the item, however all items are guaranteed to have at least 1 stat within the range, unless it is an exclusive item or a God roll from a boss in a raid.

Another thing that could be changed is the option to upgrade equipment without having to reroll affixes, or choose which stats to boost. As with base equipment, it would have to be done per item, and the item comparison interface would not display all the possible stats at once.

Item Luck

The Luck stat of a player can increase the likelihood of locating items and the properties that are generated by loot, and the strength of these properties. However, it doesn't directly impact damage or the ability to upgrade items. It merely gives the player a possibility to obtain better equipment in earlier waves and is thus more beneficial in the initial game run as opposed to later ones, as most players prioritize greater weapon scaling and defense over damage gains.

In addition to influencing the discovery of items, Luck also increases the probability of being successful when upgrading items using the Blacksmith. This is not to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall upgrade chance which increases with each level of the item and can be further enhanced by using an anti-material such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.

The shields, armor and weapons come with a default Luck value of 40. These items can then be enhanced with golden ingots, spined leather, or oak boards (depending on the material of the item) to grant a further +40 Luck, or to increase the luck of an item, up to 140.

Furthermore there are certain items, like the Hollow infused weapon can be outfitted to increase the damage dealt by any damage-dealing skill by 5percent. These items can be found in the shop or created using the right ingredients.

Item Failure

Not all upgrades work. Cash shop items can be used to boost the chances of success for an upgrade or to stop players from losing their item if it does not work.

When you upgrade an item the success rate is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the chance of completing the upgrade successfully, and can be enhanced by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. The percentage of success can only be increased so much, and the likelihood that an upgrade will fail cannot exceed 100%..

The success of an item upgrades is also influenced by the luck of the item.  item upgrader  has a base success rate of 25%, and every item that has Luck increases that chance by an additional 5%.

The item upgrade overlays are rendered above the items in the inventory. This may obscure enchantment effects and other effects. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
